HE Lieutenant General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, Deputy Chairman of Police and Public Security in Dubai, visited a number of nature reserves and environmentally important sites in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi during a series of tours organised by our team. HE Dhahi and his accompanying delegation learned about the best practices implemented by EAD to protect Abu Dhabi’s environment and its rich biodiversity. He was accompanied by our SG HE Dr Sheikha Salem Al Dhaheri and Ahmed Al Hashemi, Acting Executive Director of TMBS.
The Planning and Performance Management Division (PPM) organised the Annual Strategy & Performance Retreat this month. The retreat was held virtually for five consecutive days. During the first day of the retreat, the winners of Al Reyada Award were announced and recognised. The outcome of the EAD Strategy 2016-2020 was also highlighted during the first day. From day one to day five, the focus of the retreat was on the EAD Strategy 2021-2025. Priority owners had the opportunity to present their initiatives, KPI’s, challenges, etc. Comments from priority owners and sub-priority owners were received as well as guidance from our Secretary General.
Children of all ages can now enjoy learning about how to conserve the environment through a fun experience at Kidzania, Abu Dhabi by visiting our EAD booth. As part of EAD’s outreach goal of increasing awareness about the environment in our community, EAD launched a booth in Kidzania that aims to educate children on how to preserve and be pro-active in caring for the environment while having fun playing. In line with the celebration of the World Water Day, EAD hosted the “Tide Turners Plastic Challenge” in collaboration with United Nations Environment Programme. This challenge aims to educate students about single-use plastic and invite them to take part in tackling this issue to be the champions of change. The “Tide Turner Plastic Challenge” contributes towards addressing a major issue that affects the ecosystem globally.
Al Watbha Wetland Reserve is temporary closed from Wednesday 31 March until November 2021, due to the bird nesting season that started early this year. To protect the nests, it is important to close the Reserve. This year the flamingo nesting began in February instead of March, and there are 1,000 nests recorded, indicating that the nesting season will be successful.
In celebration of Earth Hour, The Environmental Information, Science & Outreach Management Sector (EISOM) conducted a virtual session to educate the public on more ways to efficiently reduce the energy consumption. The session was hosted by our colleague, Eng. Hussein Hamed, Scientist Climate Change from Environment Quality Sector (EQS).
The Environmental Information, Science & Outreach Management Sector (EISOM) continued its “Environmental Talks” and “Green Youth Majlis” sessions in March. The sessions highlighted “Waste and Minimalist Lifestyle”, “How to Adapt Sustainable Mindset”, “Achieving Sustainable Grazing in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi” and “Circular Economy”.
ADSG conducts its quarterly meeting
Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group quarterly meeting took place on 31 March 2021, the meeting was a knowledge sharing session about Implementation of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Disclosures in Abu Dhabi. The session featured a dynamic panel of experts from Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange, Aldar and Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Company who shared their essential insights on the growing relevance of ESG locally.
Al Wathba Fossil Dunes are wonderous sculptures that are in need of protection. The fossil dunes are extremely fragile and susceptible to damage. EISOM is organising a clean-up campaign from April 2nd to the 3rd. If you would like to participate, send an email to outreach@ead.gov.ae
The holy month of Ramadan for this year 2021 will commence around 12 or 13 of April lasting 30 days. Ramadan is the month of fasting, with Muslims abstaining from eating and drinking from sunrise to sunset. Fasting during the holiday is one of the Five Pillars of Islam.
Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on April 22 to support environmental protection. This year’s theme is “Three Days of Climate Action”.
