HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MONTH
EAD develops a model for the smart management of the strategic freshwater storage project, Makhazin Al Khayr

In cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Transmission and Despatch Company, EAD has developed a smart management model for the strategic groundwater storage project – Makhazin Al Khayr. The model aims to use artificial intelligence systems and machine language to manage and operate wells, determine the quantities of pumped water, and control the water quality, so the water pumped from 315 underground wells remains within the permissible specifications and standards for drinking water in Abu Dhabi. The project also contributes to significantly reducing cost, reducing human interference in the operation process, and achieving the highest efficiency in the project without any errors. The project includes operating 315 underground wells which is the total number of pumping wells in the project. These wells can be used in times of emergency and can pump about 181 844m3 per day to overcome any shortage in the supply of freshwater resources.

Executive Regulations of the Abu Dhabi Wild Hunting Law Are Amended

The Executive Council of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi has issued a local decree amending the executive regulations issued by Resolution No. (69) of 2015 for Local Law No. (22) of 2005 regarding the regulation of hunting in Abu Dhabi. The law is currently being implemented by EAD. The Executive Council Decision No. (5) of 2021 amendments to the executive regulations of the Hunting Law in Abu Dhabi will support the hunting sector in its efforts to preserve the heritage of traditional hunting in Abu Dhabi. This also will help to ensure that this old age Arab tradition and its values are passed on to the current and future generations while ensuring respect for the legal and environmental framework.

EAD Zayed’s Lights’ Event at Dubai Expo 2020 Highlights Climate Change in the Polar Region

In celebration of the Antarctica Day, EAD brought together people from the UAE who have visited the world’s polar regions, Antarctica, and the Arctic, at Dubai Expo 2020 for the first time, during the UAE’s 50th Golden Jubilee week. The purpose of the gathering was to share stories on historic UAE Antarctic and Arctic expeditions from the previous 50 years, discuss the importance of the polar regions to the UAE in respect to climate change, and plan future environmental collaborations, in celebration of the UAE’s 50th Anniversary.

“Zayed Higher” registers four Ghaf trees in the EAD’s database

Within the framework of the Year of the Fiftieth celebrations and to support the preservation of the Ghaf tree which is considered one of the cultural symbols that the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan valued deeply, Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination hosted the “”In the Shade of the Ghaf Tree” event. This included recording and documenting the ages of four of the Ghaf trees located within the organization’s Agricultural Rehabilitation and Development Centre in EAD’s database, which estimated the ages of each of these trees at over fifty years.

EAD Releases the Findings of its Fourth Cycle GHG Emissions Inventory

On a virtual event, EAD released the findings of its fourth Green House Gas (GHG) emissions inventory, using 2018 GHG data and future forecasts until 2030. Two emission scenarios were used, including a Business-As-Usual scenario, as per the state of emissions and implemented mitigation measures in the year 2016 (BAU2016); and a “Mitigation Path” scenario, as per the state of actual emissions in 2018 and the partners’ announced plans and initiatives to mitigate emissions.

EAD chairs the 81st Abu Dhabi Hazardous Material Management Team

EAD chaired the 81st Abu Dhabi Hazardous Material Management Team (AD-HMMT) meeting that took place in a virtual meeting attended by its 28 member entities representing local government organisations and federal entities. The team discussed recent achievements and efforts for a safe society and environment from hazardous materials risks and to protect society, properties, and the environment from hazardous materials’ affects. As well as their achievement in the preparation of the unified guide that includes procedures related to handling hazardous materials and waste in various scenarios. The progress of linking the Integrated Hazardous Materials Management System (IHMMS) with all relevant entities in the emirate was also presented. This is part of the efforts to further strengthen the UAE’s leading position among the world’s top countries when it comes to the management of hazardous materials.

YOUR HAPPY MOMENT

My happy moment is seeing my brother Saleh Al Ameri being selected to spend eight months in an almost complete living isolation simulator in a Mars mission. This mission is his first mission. It is considered the first UAE Analog Mission and he is the primary analog astronaut.  The 8-month mission is part of SIRIUS-21 that will take place in an isolated environment in Moscow. He will be spending time with astronauts from the USA and Russia. I am so proud of my brother Saleh!
