EAD began planting seedlings of the Al-Sarh tree. As a pilot, 25 seedlings were planted within the boundaries of Jabal Hafit National Park. This project is part of EAD’s programme to conserve and propagate important and threatened native plant species and it is a directive of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in the Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of EAD, to propagate and preserve the local Al-Sarh tree.
EAD will launch its new documentary: “Our Sea … Our Future,”. The documentary highlights the fisheries sector and showcases the pressure that Abu Dhabi’s fisheries face, and the actions taken by EAD to contain the impacts of overfishing on the marine environment, with the aim of ensuring the recovery and renewal of the Emirate’s fish stocks.
The documentary will premiere on Emarat TV in the following dates:
Saturday 1 May 2021 at 09:30 pm and 3:30 am
Wednesday 5 May 2021, at 02:30 pm and again 3:30 am.
The Dugong and Seagrass Toolkit was selected as one of the 25 most impactful innovations in the UAE’s Government sector by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Centre for Government Innovation. The selection was determined after a rigorous screening and assessment process where several competitors showcased their projects over a period of one year.
The Dugong and Seagrass Research Toolkit is an initiative by EAD, the energy company Total and the Dugong Memorandum of Understanding of the United Nations’ Convention on Migratory Species (CMS Dugong MoU) based in Abu Dhabi. It provides an easily accessible online decision-making tool to guide the selection of specific dugong and seagrass research recommendations which can be adopted in specific circumstances.
The aerial survey carried out in the Arabian Oryx Protected Area last November by the TMBS team revealed a 22 % increase in the number of Oryx. Today the herd has reached to 946 heads compared to no more than160 initially recorded. The increase is a success of the Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Arabian Oryx Reintroduction Programme which was launched in 2007 with a goal to relocate the Arabian Oryx.
The Environmental Information, Science & Outreach Management Sector (EISOM) continued its “Environmental Talks” and “Green Youth Majlis” sessions in April.
In celebration of Earth Day, The Sustainable Campus Initiative hosted an Environmental Youth Talk with Sustainability Activist and Influencer, Alia Al Blooshi. The session encouraged youth to start a zero-waste lifestyle with key tips and practices.
The Environmental Information, Science & Outreach Management Sector (EISOM) with the support of EAD’s experts developed The Library of Resources that has more than 100 environmental resources available as books, guidelines, infographics, films, and documentaries. This library not only provides a variety of resources that can be used by our staff and external partners and stakeholders, but it can also be used for our children’s school projects. Did you know that the Blanford’s Fox (Vulpes Cana) is one of three fox species in the emirate of Abu Dhabi and it was recently seen in our camera traps located at Jabal Hafit?
Drs Saif Al Ghais, Amrita De Soyza, Fredric Launay, Walter Pearson, & Richard Perry, locked themselves away for several days at Sweihan in 1999 to start the process of formulating Abu Dhabi’s first Environmental Strategy. They came back with a strategy that said EAD (ERWDA at that time) would need to grow to 400 staff to achieve what needed to be done. HE Mohammed Al Bowardi then instructed them to engage widely with stakeholders rather than to try and grow the Agency. There followed a series of workshops and planning sessions, all done internally and without consultants that resulted in the first strategy in 2002.
