As part of the EAD 2021–2025 Strategy, there are 12 key success measures to be achieved by the year 2025. In every issue of the Insider, we will be highlighting 2 success measures:
Climate Change:
• 15 % less greenhouse gases compared to 2016
• Adaptation plans in place to protect all vulnerable sectors
Air Quality:
• National air quality standards met year-round
• PM 2.5 exposure standards met in full
• 90 % of days in a year that meet national air quality standards by end of 2025
EAD Chairman HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan praised the commitment of fishermen and their effective role in implementing the decisions and measures related to the fishing sector taken by EAD to protect fish stocks. The new measures contributed significantly to reducing the effects of overfishing on the marine environment and resulted in an improvement in the fisheries Sustainable Exploitation Index for the third year in a row. The index increased from 8.9% in 2018 to 62.3% at the end of 2021. The indicator was calculated in 2021 by evaluating a total of 32 species which represented 98.6% of landings in 2021.
Our Managing Director and President of the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN), HE Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, received the Award for Outstanding Governmental Performance as part of the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Government Excellence Awards at the ceremony held at Expo 2020 on 3 March 2022.
Our SG HE Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri highlighted the significant role women have played in the field of environmental conservation during an event organised by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), which was held at the Women’s Pavilion at Expo 2020 entitled: ‘Women in Conservation, Taking the Lead.’ HE Mariam bint Mohammed Saeed Hareb Al Mheiri, Minister of Minister of Climate Change and Environment also took part in the panel discussion.
The 12th World Environment Education Congress (WEEC) will be hosted for the first time in the region in 2024. The hosting was officially announced during the 11th WEEC in Prague, Czech Republic in the presence of our SG, Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri and EISOM representatives.
WEEC is one of the most important events and conferences in the field of environmental education in the world. EAD has been planning the hosting in coordination with Abu Dhabi Convention and Exhibition Bureau of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi. The Congress will take place from 29 January until 2 February 2024, under the theme ‘Connecting People, Creating Tomorrow.’
EAD screened one of its most significant documentaries, entitled “Wild Abu Dhabi: Turtles of Al Dhafra” in the Sustainability Pavilion at Expo 2020. The documentary highlights the efforts of the EAD team on the studies of the turtles in the Arabian Gulf. Attendees to the event included several EAD Stakeholders and Partners from government and private organisations.
The executive regulation was issued based on Law No. (21) of 2005 for waste management in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, with an aim to regulate and improve waste management in the emirate. This will be achieved by reducing and reusing generated waste of all kinds and applying the best methods and techniques available for waste recycling, treatment, resource recovery and safe disposal. This is to ensure the protection of the environment as well as minimising harm to human health and contributing towards achieving national and local indicators related to waste, thereby supporting efforts towards sustainable development.
EISOM continues organising the clean-up campaigns
As part of the Citizen Science Initiative, the Environmental Information, Science & Outreach Management Sector (EISOM) in collaboration with the EAD Eco-Ambassadors and Imkan Properties organised a clean-up campaign in Al Jurf, to collect waste that has been washed up from the sea. 20 environmental ambassadors participated in this clean-up and 100 Kilogrammes of waste were collected. A second clean-up was organised in collaboration with Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination at Al Gurm Beach.
In celebration of Emirati Children’s Day, a team from EAD’s Abu Dhabi Pearls Project visited the Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination in Al Mirfa, as part of our initiatives to connect with the community to enhance environmental awareness. During the visit, the team conducted a workshop on sustainable pearl oyster aquaculture and engaged children of determination in pearl extraction activities.
PRC organises the 2022 Annual Staff General Assembly event
The Public Relations and Communications Division conducted the first in-person Annual Staff General Assembly in two years, on 7 March at Al Wathba Fossil Dunes, a newly opened protected area managed by EAD. More than 200 staff attended the event. The event showcased EAD achievements of the year 2021. Our SG, Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, gave a speech highlighting key projects for the year 2022. The event included a tour by our Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity Sector (TBMS) experts to explore the fossil dunes at the protected area. Click here to watch a short highlight video of the event.
AD wins the award for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation 2022
EAD in cooperation with several strategic partners won the first place of the Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation 2022. The prize was received by our colleagues from the Environment Quality Section (EQS), Dr Mohamed Dawoud, Mansour Al Tamimi and Wasel Abdelwahid.
PRC organises the first influencers event
The Public Relations and Communications Division (PRC) conducted the first influencers event on 8 March 2022 at Al Wathba Fossil Dunes protected area. The event aimed to encourage influencers to join Abu Dhabi’s environmental journey and advocate for the sustainability of Abu Dhabi’s precious environment. 14 influencers attended the event from different emirates with a total reach of over 1 million.
PPM conducts the Annual Strategy & Performance Retreat for the year 2022
The Planning and Performance Management Division (PPM) organised the Annual Strategy & Performance Retreat this month. The retreat was held at the Ritz Carlton Hotel on 23 March. The retreat focused on the EAD Strategy 2021–2025. Priority owners had the opportunity to present their initiatives, KPI’s, challenges, etc. Comments from priority owners and sub-priority owners were received as well as guidance from our Secretary General.
The holy month of Ramadan for this year is expected to commence on 2 April lasting 30 or 29 days.
EAD is organising the Innovative session targeting general public. This session aims to generate innovative ideas to increase the environmental awareness of the community.
EAD is organising the session in coordination with the Green Youth Majlis (GYM) members targeting the youth. The session aims to teach youth how to create Ramadan and Eid decorations using recycled materials.
Asia Climate Forum is the dedicated climate change & environmental services event for Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands. It will be held in conjunction with CleanEnviro Summit Singapore and Singapore International Water Week. HE Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri will participate in the forum with a recording video.
On the occasion of the Earth Day, Mohamed Bin Zayed (MBZ) Conservation Fund is organising with the support of EAD a session about MBZ’s successful projects on conservation of species. The session is open to the general public.

I recently experienced a very happy moment in my life. This month my colleagues Mansour Al Tamimi, Wasel Abdelwahid and I were awarded the first place for the most pioneer development and productive project during the Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agriculture Innovation 2022.
