
Bu Tinah Island, located within Marawah Marine Protected Area, managed by EAD, is listed on UNESCO’s Biosphere Reserves list and is shortlisted for the Seven Wonders of Nature, reflecting AbuDhabi’s ongoing efforts to preserve nature reserves for future generations.
A delegation headed by HE Dr. Shaikha Salem Al-Dhaheri, Secretary General of Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi recently visited Singapore to exchange knowledge, present its best practices and learn more about the country’s pioneering initiatives in waste management, water resource management, and sustainable urban development practices. The EAD team witnessed the country’s success in using nature-based solutions to conserve biodiversity and shared the Agency’s best practices with public and commercial sector stakeholders in Singapore.
As part of Abu Dhabi Mangrove Initiative (ADMI), the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has showcased its latest drone-based mangrove cultivation technologies in cooperation with Nabat, a climate tech company launched last year by the Advanced Technology Research Council’s commercialisation arm, VentureOne. The demonstration was conducted during a visit undertaken by an agency delegation to present this experience to His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Salman Bin Hamad Al Khalifa in the Kingdom of Bahrain, reflecting EAD’s vision of establishing the principles of cooperation and exchange of expertise to advance the future of the region. EAD’s mangrove-planting efforts represent an effective nature-based solution to mitigate the effects of climate change and support the ambitious UAE initiative to plant 100 million mangrove trees by 2030, while contributing to the efforts of the UAE-led Mangrove Alliance for Climate.
As part of its ongoing efforts to promote scientific research, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Trends Research & Advisory, a leading research center that leverages international academic and research expertise. This partnership aims to support EAD’s efforts in research, training, studies, and field surveys, contributing to its strategic goals of environmental conservation, biodiversity protection, and sustainable development in Abu Dhabi. The collaboration will encompass joint research on topics of mutual interest, including social, political, economic, and environmental studies, as well as field surveys. It will also involve the exchange of experts and researchers to leverage their expertise, encourage research publications, and participate in academic events. Additionally, the partnership will include organising joint research activities, seminars, and environmental conferences, as well as analysing economic, social, and political trends to assess their impact on environmental protection efforts and future forecasting.

Not far from Abu Dhabi sits a natural treasure – the Marawah Biosphere Reserve, which hosts a wide range of marine and coastal ecosystems, including seagrass beds, coral reefs and mangroves. The first of its kind in the country, the biosphere reserve is home to more than 60 per cent of the UAE’s population of dugongs.
